Follow these steps to make RealOnePlayer the default media player for RealMedia files on your Macintosh. Be sure to read these notes. 1. Depending on how your Internet browser is set up, RealPlayer might start playing immdiately, or it might simply place a RealPlayer file on your desktop. If the RealOne Player application doesn't start, hide applications and look on your desktop for a file called demo.rm. Double clicking this file will start the ProStream. If the file is on your desktop and either has a blank icon or your mac asks how to open the file, you might not have RealOne Player installed on your Mac. 2. Ascertain RealOnePlayer has been installed on your computer. To do so, launch the Finder's Find function by pressing COMMAND+F. Enter "RealOne Player" in the "file name contains" field. Make sure no other criteria is selected and hit "Search." Typically the RealOne Player should be in the Macintosh HD:Applications folder. If you cannot find the application, download the latest version and run the installer. Once RealOne has been installed on your Mac, you should be able to immediately stream audio. If not, try the following settings. 3. Locate and select the File Helpers category under Receiving Files in the left pane of the Preferences window. Click on the word "Extension" in the upper right corner to sort the displayed settings by extension name. Rapidly type "r, m" to scroll the list to the Real Media settings.
4. Double click the File Helper setting for Real Audio to open the Edit File Helper window seen below. In the "File Type" section, click the Browse button and locate the RealOne Player application (typically in the Macintosh HD:Applications folder.) Next, in the Download Destination section, select Temporary Items Folder. (It seems this setting is disregarded in OS-X but it doesn't hurt to set it this way.) In the "Handling" section, set the popup menu for "How to handle" to "View with Application" and click the Browse button to again locate the RealOne Player application. Click OK to close the Edit File Helper window. Be sure to read these notes.
There are known issues between OS-X and Internet Explorer preferences. As OS-X is refined and as Safari is implemented, the above settings may provide inconsistent results. 1. The setting in the "File Type" section indicated above should instruct the Mac OS to put a RealOne Player icon on any .rm file that you download but the Finder preferences set inside the Mac "Get Info" dialog box supercede this setting. If, after trying to access a RealMedia stream, you notice an .rm file on your desktop with an ICON other than RealOne Player, you do have the option to change how your Mac handles .rm files in the "Get Info" dialog. 2. Setting the download destination to the "Temporary Items Folder" should prevent your desktop from becoming littered with ICONs but at this time, the setting is not predictable. 3. The setting in the "How to handle" section indicated above should instruct the Mac OS to put a RealOne Player icon on any .rm file that you download. The Finder preferences set inside the Mac "Get Info" dialog box supercede this setting. If, after trying to access a RealMedia stream, you notice an .rm file on your desktop with an ICON other than RealOne Player, you do have the option to change how your Mac handles .rm files in the "Get Info" dialog.
1. There has to be an .rm file on your Mac to perform this function. You can either use one that results from clicking on a ProStream or ProComm Radio streaming audio link or you can simply rename any junk text file on your Mac with an .rm suffix. 2. Control click on the .rm file and go to "Get Info" and click the disclosure triangle to the left of "Open with." 3. RealOne Player should be present in the pop up selection of applications available. If, not, you can select "Other" and locate it.
4. After selecting RealOne Player, click the "Change All" button set all .rm files on your Mac to open with RealOne Player. 5. Close the Info window. . |
